National Organizations

There are a number of national organizations for the deaf and hard of hearing, meeting a number of different needs and desires. All, however, are for the benefit of the deaf and hard of hearing and welcome deaf and hard of hearing members.

National Association of the Deaf is available to promote, protect, and preserve the rights and quality of life of deaf and hard of hearing individuals in the United States of America. The National Black deaf Advocates (NBDA) is the oldest and largest consumer organization of deaf and hard of hearing black deaf people in the United States. DWU is the premiere organization serving the interests of deaf and hard of hearing women in North America . DWU is the only such organization in the nation and DWU just celebrated its 20th anniversary. DWU continue to grow and features new programs for the benefit of deaf and hard of hearing women: Mentorship, Speakers Bureau, and Her story. The Hearing Loss Association of America is the nation’s largest organization for people with hearing loss. HLAA exists to open the world of communication for people with hearing loss through information, education, advocacy and support. ADARA strives to be the leader among professional organizations in transforming the paradigm of rehabilitation of Deaf people to enhancing the quality of life with people who are Deaf or Hard of Hearing. This intent will be achieved through a balanced approach of consumerism and professionalism and will require the organization to continually examine the fundamental philosophies and attitudes that manifest themselves in the image of the organization and the configuration of the membership. Whether the term is disability, disabled, disabilities, handicapped or whatever the popular "categorizing" label.... WAPD is a nonpartisan, nonprofit association under God, that represents huge portions of the one in five residents of earth that are being... ALIVE, INVOLVED AND EFFECTIVE in their daily living. The Alexander Graham Bell Association for the Deaf and Hard of Hearing (AG Bell) is a lifelong resource, support network and advocate for listening, learning, talking and living independently with hearing loss. Through publications, advocacy, training, scholarships and financial aid, AG Bell promotes the use of spoken language and hearing technology. Headquartered in Washington, D.C., with chapters located in the United States and a network of international affiliates, AG Bell's global presence provides its members and the public with the support they need – close to home. With over a century of service, AG Bell supports its mission: Advocating Independence through Listening and Talking! The Association of Medical Professionals With Hearing Losses provides information, promotes advocacy and mentorship, and creates a network for individuals with hearing loss interested in or working in health care fields.
